Yokohama F Marinos Season Preview 2019

YOKOHAMA F MARINOS

Yokohama F Marinos were the most entertaining team to watch in J1 last season in terms of goals.  Most of their matches were a joy to watch, and they were just 1 of 2 teams (Reysol being the other) that wasn’t involved in a 0-0 game.  But with 56 goals conceded they showed they had major issues in defence though.

With that in mind it’s a bit alarming they haven’t tried to strengthen their defence more, especially considering Yamanaka have left for Urawa and veteran CB Nakazawa has retired.   Thai wingback Theeraton will replace Yamanaka, while in central defence Dusan and Thiago Martins (who both arrived midway through last season) will be the preferred duo but neither of those oozes quality.

They’ve made some changes up front though, with strikers Hugo Vieira and Ito having been replaced by the 2 Brazilians Marcos Junior and Edigar Junio. It’s difficult to say if that’s an improvement or not, but with manager Ange Postecoglou’s offensive playing-style there are likely to be plenty of both  chances and goals for them.   AM Miyoshi  who at times were a key-player for Consadole Sapporo last season is also new, and he will add a lot of creativity to their midfield.

Postecoglou is a smart and highly-rated manager, but whether his style of football fits into Japan is difficult to say. Last year wasn’t that bad considering it was his first season in Japan, but if he is to have a future with Marinos they need to improve vastly.  I’m not sure their defence is up to the standard to take them up to the upper half of the table though.
