J.League 1 Season Preview 2018 – V-Varen Nagasaki

Nagasaki weren’t considered to a contender for promotion last season and most pundits had them on the lower end of the table, myself included. It was a big surprise that they managed to finish 2nd and then earn direct promotion then, especially considering how many players they brought in ahead of last season. About 7-8 of their regular starters only arrived in pre-season, so manager Takagi did an amazing job making them work together as a team.

They will try to build on that here in J1 as well, and hae a couple of new players to help with that. There’s no major signings though, and the most interesting one is fringe Australia NT-member Halloran who’s brought in from Bundesliga 2-side Heidenheim.   Although the team obviously has a great chemistry, I can’t see Nagasaki having any chance of survival in J1 this season, unless a couple of other teams fail miserably.
