J.League 1 Season Preview 2018 – Consadole Sapporo

Consadole equaled their best ever J1-finish by coming 11th last season, and it is only the 2nd time in their club history that they managed to stay in J1 after a promotion.

Since last season they brought in the former Hiroshima and Urawa-manager Petrovic, which means Yomoda have moved into a coaching-role instead.  That could be a smart move, as Petrovic have worked as a successful mentor in both his 2 previous jobs, with the trophy-winning coaches Moriyasu (Hiroshima, J.League) and Horii (Urawa, ACL) both having learned a lot from him.

Consadole are not a particularly well-playing team, but they work hard and know how to use the aerial strength of their 2 target-men Tokura and Jay. Their defensive record wasn’t much to brag about, and they only managed to get a clean sheet on 7 occasions. They brought in a couple of new additions to their midfield, and look overall stronger than last year.  Some of their players are getting quite old, especially up front, but they should be more than strong enough to survive in J1 this year as well, although doing any better than last year’s 11th might prove tough. The added influence on the bench with Petrovic will be a contributing factor.
