J.League 1 2017 Season Preview – Yokohama F Marinos

YOKOHAMA F MARINOS

A somewhat disappointing season (again) for Marinos last year, as they finished all the way down in 10th place overall.  Manager Erick Mombaerts have not really managed to get the most out of his team, with only a 7th place and a 10th place to show for so far, and he need to deliver better results this season if he is to keep his job.

Marinos have made a ton of changes since last season, with 6 players who saw regular playing time having left.  They seem to have made some good signings though, and overall look stronger than they did at the same point last season.   They got an almost brand new defence, with Yamanaka, Matsubara and Degenek set to join veteran Nakazawa in the back-4, but on paper atleast it looks strong. And Mombaerts seems like a manager who put a lot of focus on defensive organization, so I expect relatively few goals against them this season as well.

In midfield Ogihara and Babunski are new, and especially the latter seems like an exciting player.  Ogihara as well got lots of potential, but he’s known as a bit of a troublemaker from his time at Cerezo, so it remains to be seen whether he will manage to adapt or not. Up front, Hugo Vieira will replace the disappointing Kayke.  He scored a lot of goals in the Slovenian league the last couple of seasons, but his stats from Portugal aren’t really that impressive. Either way, they also got the promising Togashi to use as cover, and if that doesn’t work either then they can always turn to “Mr. No Goal” Sho Ito.

Don’t think Marinos will be good enough to challenge for an ACL-finish, but somewhere on the upper half of the table should be possible.
