J.League 1 2017 Season Preview – Jubilo Iwata

Jubilo did reasonably well in their first season back in J1, especially in the first stage where they finished 8th.  With all the newly promoted teams looking relatively strong, I think this season can be tougher for Jubilo though, and they may find themselves involved in the relegation-battle.

The only player they will miss from last season is top-scorer Bothroyd, but Kawamata, if he can stay injury-free, should be a decent replacement as he has the potential to hit 15+ goals.  They’ve also brought 38 year old Shunsuke Nakamura in from Marinos. He had a fantastic season last year despite his age, so should be a great addition to this Jubilo-team. Musayev from Uzbekistan could also turn out to be a scoop,  so they have done some smart signings over the winter.

However, their defence looks like one of the weakest in the league, and despite the hype  I don’t think Kaminski is a particular good goalkeeper. So they are likely to concede plenty of goals this season too.  With several of their key players also well up in their 30’s it’s unlikely they will be able to compete at top level throughout the entire season. Also, they don’t really have cover if the injury-plagued Kawamata were to be sidelined (the 2nd choice K.Saito failed to score in any of his 17 appearances last season).
