J.League 1 2017 Season Preview – FC Tokyo

FC Tokyo had a somewhat disappointing 2016-season, and finished all the way down in 9th place. They were not able to copy the relative success they had in 2015, when they finished 4th and qualified for ACL.

Lack of a real goalscorer was their biggest problem, and R.Maeda ended up as their top-scorer with a meagre 6 goals. Their new signings T.Abe and Muriqui (signed midway through the season) didn’t live up to expectations either, so all in all it was a very poor season for them.

Partly to blame for that is the manager Shinoda, who are still in charge. FC Tokyo was one of the most boring and predictable teams to watch last season, despite having some very exciting players on their roster.  Not really sure if Shinoda is the right man to guide them back to glory, cause the team overall doesn’t really look that improved. They had good strikers in their team last year as well, but all of them failed to deliver and it’s hard to see Okubo or Nagai do anything about that.

A lot of pundits has them as a contender for the title this year actually, including Weekly Soccer Digest (Rated as the 4th best team), but I would be surprised if they managed to qualify for ACL.
